What is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a technique physical therapists may use in Massachusetts for the treatment of myofascial pain and movement impairments.  It is a specialized treatment.  It is usually combined with other physical therapy techniques.

Dry needling focuses on trigger points.  Trigger points are taut bands of muscle within a larger muscle group.  The goal of dry needling is to relieve pain and improve range of motion by inactivating or releasing these trigger points.

Dry needling uses a thin filiform needle that penetrates the skin and enters the trigger point muscle.  Dry needling is referred to as “dry” as it does not incorporate any medication or injection.  While no liquid is injected into the muscle, the needle itself allows a physical therapist to stimulate and release the trigger points that can’t be reached otherwise.

Our physical therapist, Andy Ng, DPT, can perform a thorough evaluation to help determine if you are a good candidate for this treatment.   If you are interested in Dry Needling in Randolph MA, please call us at 781.961.4460.
