Chiropractic care focuses on the relationship between the nervous system and the spine.

Chiropractic treatments aim to correct this, allowing your body to restore itself to its optimal form and function. 

The most common chiropractic procedure is known as “spinal manipulation,” also called “chiropractic adjustment.” The purpose of the spinal manipulation is to restore joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints and surrounding tissue that have become compromised or restricted. Manipulation of an affected joint and surrounding tissue restores mobility, thereby alleviating pain and muscle tightness, and allowing the joint and tissues to heal.

Though each patient’s condition is individually evaluated and diagnosed, all treatment plans will include which body parts he will be adjusting at your visits, which modalities (such as ultrasound, heat, and traction) he will be using, which exercises he recommends you do at home, ways to better your posture, and anticipated length of chiropractic care. While the anticipated length of chiropractic care will be announced at the beginning of your care, at each appointment, the chiropractic physician will measure your response to the treatment and adjust the treatment plan accordingly.

The chiropractic physician’s goals with all treatment are to reduce pain, restore normal joint function and improve muscle function, and depending on the patient’s individual diagnosis and how they progress through the treatment plan, the existence of pain, as well as the assigned treatment plan, can last anywhere from one visit to a lifetime of pain being relieved by ongoing chiropractic care once a week, once a month, or even once year.

Chiropractic care helps the body to heal itself throughout the entire course of treatment, so completing the full chiropractic treatment plan is vital for not only immediate pain relief but to also achieve full rehabilitation so as to prevent future injury. To reach these goals, the chiropractic physician will, if needed, refer you to neurological, neurosurgical and/or orthopedic specialists for co-treatment, depending on your diagnosis.

The sound that you hear during most chiropractic adjustments is the sound of gases between the joints being released. The sound is the same sound that you hear when people crack their knuckles. There is no damage being caused to the joint when this occurs.
